About Us
Ambika Sharan Singh
Ambika Sharan Singh (22 December 1922 – 6 July 1977), affectionately known as Surajiya Babuji by his family, was a distinguished freedom fighter and a skilled administrator, notably serving as the Finance Minister of Bihar among other government roles.
Born into a farming family in the village of Dhamar in Bhojpur District, Bihar, he faced personal loss early in life when his father, Pradeep Ra Singh, and mother passed away. His uncle, Ramsunder Ra, stepped in to care for the family. Ambika was an exceptional student, graduating as a top performer from Ara Jain School and later earning both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Arts from Patna University.
Inspired by Gandhi's philosophies during his student years, he joined the freedom movement alongside Kailash Singh from his village. After India gained independence, he returned to complete hisster’s degree.
In 1940, he went underground after being arrested by the police but managed to escape their custody. The leaders of the Bihar Congress trusted him and appointed him to lead the Youth Congress Wing in 1942. During that year, he traveled extensively throughout Bihar to inspire the youth to join the struggle for India's freedom. Following independence, in 1947, he was named the first president of the Youth Congress Wing.
He entered politics after India gained independence, fulfilling the wishes of the late Shri Anugrah Narayan Sinha. He successfully contested the Ara Muffasil seat in 1952, followed by victories in the elections of 1957 and 1962. In 1967, when the assembly seat was reconstituted as Barhara, he was elected representing the Indian National Congress. Unfortunately, he faced legal challenges and was barred from contesting elections for six years. His close friend, Ram Vilas Singh, won the Barhara constituency election in 1972.
In 1969, after the Congress party split, he aligned himself with Congress (O) alongside the late Shri Morarji Desai, becoming part of the Sangathan Congress, which later merged into the Janata Party. He contested and won the Barhara seat in the 1977 elections under the Janata Party banner.
In 1957, at just 35 years old, he took on the role of Deputy Finance Minister under Deputy Chief Minister & Finance Minister Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha in the Sri Krishna Singh Ministry. Recognized as a young and dynamic leader, he consistently presented the budget, which showcased his abilities in financial management. It is believed that he earned the position of Finance Minister through appointments made by Sri Krishna Singh, while the late Shri Anugrah Narayan Singh granted him the opportunity to deliver the budget presentation in the assembly.
He also held responsibilities in the Law Ministry during Binodanand Jha’s tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar. When K. B. Sahay assumed the Chief Minister position in 1963, he was named Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Finance Department, serving until 1967. Between 1972 and 1976, he chaired the Bihar State Financial Corporation.
Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack on July 6, 1977, at The Claridges Hotel in New Delhi. Following his death, notable figures such as then Prime Minister Morarji Desai, Chandra Shekhar, Satyendra Narain Singh, Jagjivan Ram, and Karpoori Thakur visited the hotel. His last rites were conducted in Bas Gath, Patna, by his elder son, Raghvendra Pratap Singh, who served as MLA for Barhara.
Late Shri Ambika Sharan Singh was investigated under the Iyer Committee, which found no corruption or disproportionate assets or income charges against him. However, the report did note concerns regarding misplaced generosity in waiving taxes for the Bhojpuri movie "Hamar Sansar" directed by Nazir Hussain and for a sweet shop. It's important to mention that he was not serving as a minister or MLA during the investigation, having been disqualified from contesting elections by the court in 1968.
Vision & Mission
Our Vision..
To realize the vision set for our NGO, the mission of every volunteer and member is beautifully captured in Mahatma Gandhi's favorite bhajan. Inspired by Gandhi's ideology, the late Shri Ambika Sharan embraced this sentiment, and thus, this bhajan will serve as our Mission Bhajan :
